Urban exploration in Liège — abandoned fort, graffiti, and black & white photography

Exploring an abandoned fort in Liège with my urbex partner Marisa: graffiti, decay, and moody black & white photography.

Some people spend their weekends sipping lattes and browsing IKEA. We prefer crawling through abandoned forts with crumbling staircases, graffiti-covered walls, and the occasional pigeon jump-scare. Because why settle for comfort when you can have cobwebs, mystery, and the smell of damp bricks?

Together with my urbex partner-in-crime Marisa, we dove headfirst into the forgotten belly of Liège. An old fort, long abandoned, now dressed in layers of graffiti and silence. It was moody. It was messy. It was magnificent.

🎒 The Entry

Getting in was… let’s say “creative.” A little fence-hopping, a bit of “is this stable?” and a lot of “watch your step!” Marisa, as always, was the fearless one. I was the one checking if the floor still had a floor. Spoiler: sometimes it didn’t.

🕵️‍♀️ The Exploration

Inside, the fort was a maze of arched tunnels, broken windows, and staircases that led to nowhere — or possibly another dimension. Graffiti everywhere. Some artistic, some chaotic, some just… questionable. We found a stairwell that looked like it had hosted a rave, a séance, and a demolition derby — all at once. Marisa posed like a queen of ruins. I crouched like a ninja with a camera. We were unstoppable. Except when we stopped to say “woah” every five minutes.

📸 The Shots

Black and white was the only way to go. The textures, the shadows, the drama — it all screamed monochrome. I’m still deep in post-production, but the vibe is clear: grit meets grace, chaos meets composition, and Marisa meets a suspicious hole in the floor (don’t worry, she’s fine).

Some previews are already uploaded here — think moody corridors, graffiti poetry, and windows that frame nature like accidental art. The full series? Coming soon. Once I win the battle against dust, contrast, and my own perfectionism.

🧠 Reflections

Urban exploration isn’t just about cool photos. It’s about the thrill of the unknown, the laughter when you misstep, and the quiet awe when sunlight hits a broken wall just right. It’s about friendship, curiosity, and the joy of finding beauty in places most people forget.

So here’s to forts, to Marisa, and to every abandoned space that still has stories to tell. And to pigeons — for keeping us humble.

📸 Stay tuned for the full gallery

Ruins, shadows, and a whole lot of character. Because decay never looked so good.

Yellowstone with my son — photography, adventure, and golden moments

A father-son journey through Yellowstone: golden hours, wildlife, a brutal hike, and unforgettable views.

It started with a plan. A father-son adventure. Just me and Dimitri. On Friday, 3 October, we checked into Van der Valk near Schiphol — the calm before the storm. The next morning, we were ready to fly. Bags packed, cameras charged, hearts racing. But fate had other plans: a broken AC in Amsterdam meant a 4-hour delay. By the time we landed in Bozeman, Montana, the afternoon light had faded into evening. And we still had a 3-hour drive to Canyon Lodge. Tired? Yes. Excited? Even more.

Seven days in Yellowstone. We chased golden hour like it was treasure. Every morning, before most stirred, we were out — boots crunching frost, breath visible in the crisp air. Elk grazing in the mist. Bison silhouetted against rising light. Grizzlies lumbering through snow-dusted forests. And every evening, we returned to the wild, chasing that last sliver of sun. In between, we explored: geysers, hot springs, winding roads, and quiet corners where nature whispered instead of roared.

9 October — Avalanche Peak. 🥾⛰️ Our first hike together. No warm-up. No mercy. Just Dimitri and me, chasing the summit like pros… or fools? The trail didn’t ease us in. It demanded everything. Steep, relentless, breathtaking — in every sense. The view from the top? Unreal. A panorama of peaks, clouds, and silence. The descent? A masterclass in controlled falling. My legs cursed me. My heart thanked me. Thanks for dragging me up there, son.

Photography in motion. This trip wasn’t just about landscapes. It was about connection. With nature. With my son. With the lens. I captured elk mid-stride, bears navigating snowy logs, and the quiet majesty of a single yellow tree standing bold against a mountain backdrop. Each frame tells a story — some wild, some tender. I’m still deep in post-processing, but the magic is there. You’ll see it soon.

Reflections. Yellowstone gave us more than photos. It gave us moments. Shared silence. Laughter. Sore muscles. Awe. It reminded me why I do this — why I chase light, climb peaks, and press shutter buttons in freezing wind. Because sometimes, the best pictures aren’t just seen. They’re felt.

📸 Stay tuned for the full photo series

Wild hearts. Golden light. And a father-son bond carved into the mountains.

Dates: June 12–18, 2025
Location: New York City
Purpose: Explore the city, chase Marvel magic, and capture street life through my camera

New York City is a photographer’s playground—chaotic, cinematic, and endlessly inspiring. From iconic landmarks to hidden corners, every street hums with energy. This June, I spent six days wandering its boroughs, camera in hand, blending my love for street photography with a Marvel-themed adventure.

Day 1: Tech, Superheroes & Bridges

We kicked off our trip with a pilgrimage to B&H Photo Video, the largest photo and electronics store in the world. For any photography enthusiast, it’s like stepping into gear heaven.

Next, we tracked down a Marvel filming location at Lafayette St. & East Broadway, where the gritty charm of the Lower East Side meets cinematic nostalgia. I snapped candid portraits of locals and tourists alike, framed by the same streets Spider-Man once swung through.

We ended the day with a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge—a classic. The late afternoon light was perfect for capturing silhouettes against the Manhattan skyline.

Day 2: Memory, Marvel & Ferry Views

We began with a solemn visit to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. It was a powerful experience, and I focused on capturing quiet moments of reflection.

Then we headed to the One World Observatory, another Marvel location, offering panoramic views that made for dramatic wide-angle shots.

Later, we hopped on the Staten Island Ferry, featured in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The ferry ride gave me a chance to shoot the Statue of Liberty and the city from the water—wind in my hair, camera clicking.

Day 3: Art, Architecture & Urban Pulse

We soared over the East River via the Roosevelt Island Tramway, where I caught stunning aerial shots of the city.

Inside Grand Central Terminal, I focused on the interplay of light and movement—commuters rushing beneath the celestial ceiling, echoing the chaos of The Avengers battle scene.

We wandered Fifth Avenue, admired St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and soaked up the electric vibe of Times Square, a Marvel hotspot. My lens danced between neon reflections and street performers.

The afternoon was spent at MoMA, where I photographed not just the art—Picasso, Van Gogh, Warhol—but the people engaging with it. We wrapped up in Bryant Park, sipping coffee and capturing the calm within the chaos.

Day 4: Diners, Wildlife & Gear Reload

We started with breakfast at the Skylight Diner, a retro gem perfect for moody morning shots.

Then it was off to the Bronx Zoo, where I switched gears to nature photography—zebras, gorillas, and kids marveling at the animals.

And yes, we returned to B&H Photo Video. Because once is never enough.

Day 5: Markets, Museums & Marvelous Parks

After breakfast at Chelsea Market, a food lover’s paradise in the Meatpacking District, we strolled the High Line, an elevated park that offers unique urban perspectives.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum gave me a chance to shoot aircraft and maritime history up close.

We explored Wall Street and the Charging Bull, capturing the tension and energy of the financial district.

Then came Central Park, where I focused on Bethesda Terrace, a Marvel location featured in The Avengers and Daredevil. The mix of nature and architecture was a dream to photograph.

We ended the day at Coney Island, chasing golden hour light across the boardwalk and amusement rides.

Day 6: Final Frames

On our last morning, we visited the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a filming location from Captain America: The First Avenger. It was a quiet, reflective end to a whirlwind trip.

What I Captured

Street portraits of New Yorkers in their element

Architectural contrasts between old and new

Marvel nostalgia woven into real-life settings

Moments of stillness in a city that never stops

New York gave me more than photos—it gave me stories. If you're a photographer, a Marvel fan, or just someone who loves cities with soul, NYC is calling. And trust me, your lens will fall in love.

A few weeks ago, my colleague/friend Marisa from work and I decided to embark on a street photography journey. With cameras in hand and curiosity leading the way, we set our sights on Liège—a city brimming with character, history, and vibrant urban life.

Starting at Place Saint-Lambert & Searching for Street Art
Our adventure began at Place Saint-Lambert, a central square steeped in history and buzzing with activity. Once the site of the grand Saint-Lambert Cathedral, it now stands as an open plaza where the past and present converge. The blend of historic landmarks and modern urban energy made it an excellent starting point for capturing Liège’s essence.

Hoping to capture the city’s vibrant artistic side, we set out to explore some of its well-known street art locations. However, to our disappointment, many of these areas were completely dilapidated, with faded murals and neglected spaces lacking the impact we had anticipated. Instead of dynamic, thriving artwork, we found remnants of creativity overshadowed by decay. It was a stark reminder that street art—so dependent on community engagement and upkeep—can quickly lose its magic when left uncared for. While we had hoped for bursts of color and bold expressions, what we encountered instead was a different kind of visual narrative—one of urban wear and transition.

Iconic Spots: Montagne de Bueren & Liège-Guillemins Station
One of our must-visit locations was Montagne de Bueren, the city's famous staircase. Initially, we planned to climb it, hoping to capture its dramatic leading lines and stunning views. However, the day was too warm, and we decided to admire its presence from below instead. Even without making the climb, the stairway’s steep incline, historic surroundings, and the movement of people ascending and descending provided interesting photographic opportunities.

Next, we made our way to Liège-Guillemins Railway Station, a masterpiece of modern architecture designed by Santiago Calatrava. The flowing curves and sleek aesthetics of the station provided the perfect contrast to the older buildings we had photographed earlier. Light interacted beautifully with the glass and steel structure, giving us endless opportunities to experiment with reflections, symmetry, and motion.

The Art of Observing and Capturing
Street photography is more than just taking pictures—it’s about capturing moments, emotions, and the rhythm of the city. As we wandered through the streets, we focused on observing how light shaped the environment, how people moved, and how seemingly ordinary elements could tell extraordinary stories.

For this shoot, I relied on my trusted Nikon Z8 paired with the NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 V lens. This setup allowed me to adapt effortlessly to different scenes—from wide-angle urban landscapes to detailed close-ups. The versatility of the lens let me switch perspectives quickly, ensuring I never missed an interesting subject or fleeting moment.

In post-processing, I chose to present most of my images in black and white, adding an extra dimension to the storytelling. Stripping away color allowed me to focus on composition, contrast, and the raw emotion within each frame. The interplay of light and shadow became even more pronounced, highlighting textures, movement, and the energy of Liège’s streets in a more timeless way. The absence of color emphasized the contrasts between old and new, worn and polished, capturing the city in a way that felt more immersive and expressive.

Reflections on the Experience
Our day in Liège was not just about photography; it was about immersing ourselves in the city's atmosphere, sharing creative energy, and seeing the world through a different lens—literally and metaphorically. Collaborating with Marisa added a fresh perspective, as we exchanged ideas, challenged each other’s angles, and discovered shots we might not have found on our own.

This street photography trip reinforced our love for visual storytelling. Despite the unexpected letdown with the street art, Liège still proved to be an inspiring destination, full of contrasts and character. It remains a city we’d recommend to any photographer seeking new perspectives.

I also have to thank Marisa for the really nice day, we should definitely do it again, next time let's do an urban shoot. I can definitely find some nice locations?

Thursday’s lunch break offered the perfect escape from routine, with the promise of a sunny afternoon at Zoo Planckendael. The warm, golden rays seemed to cast a spell on both animals and visitors alike, creating a serene atmosphere full of captivating moments.

Armed with my Nikon Z8 and the versatile NIKON Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR lens , I was ready to capture the magic of the day. This combination proved invaluable for photographing wildlife, offering the perfect balance of speed, clarity, and reach.

As I wandered through the zoo, I noticed the antelope seeking respite on the cool ground, a quiet contrast to the bustling energy of other exhibits. Nearby, the Inca tern stole the show with an elegant mirror-like reflection at the water’s edge—a photographer’s dream come true, perfectly captured with the long zoom of the Nikkor lens.

Continuing on, the kangaroo basked lazily in the grass, exuding a carefree vibe. Meanwhile, the female rhinoceros paced nervously, her movements drawing a stark contrast to the tranquil surroundings. In the red panda enclosure, the keepers made playful attempts to coax the pandas out of their sunny sanctuary. It seemed the pandas had no intention of leaving their cozy spot, and the keepers joined in, soaking up the sunshine themselves.

The day’s final encounter proved the most unexpected—a stork gathering nesting material near the male rhinoceros enclosure. The moment turned magical as the stork suddenly took flight, leaving me scrambling to capture the scene with no time to adjust my settings. While the shot wasn’t perfectly sharp, it carried the raw energy of the moment—a beautiful reminder that some imperfections enhance a story.

These few hours at Zoo Planckendael was a reminder of how nature can be both soothing and surprising, offering endless inspiration to photographers. The Nikon Z8 and NIKON Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR lens proved to be the perfect companions for the adventure, helping me preserve these fleeting moments in all their beauty.

Capturing Wildlife Up Close
Armed with the Nikon Z8, I was able to shoot with incredible precision and detail.
Among my favorite captures from the day were:

A playful young Crested Macaque , swinging gracefully from branch to branch, and his mother watching it and keeping it save.
The little hand that came peeping through mom's fur when it was startled by a visitor knocking on the window

The storks are already building nests and getting ready to mate.

The piercing gaze of a big cat, radiating both power and elegance.

A herd of elephants, calmly moving through their enclosure, their textured skin catching the golden light.

The Magic of Zoo Photography
Photographing animals in a zoo setting comes with its own set of challenges. Harsh lighting, glass reflections, and wire fences can sometimes hinder a perfect shot. However, with the right angles and patience, I was able to work around these obstacles and create some striking images.

Using a longer focal length, I could blur out distracting backgrounds and achieve a natural-looking setting, making the animals appear as though they were in the wild. The fast autofocus of the Nikon Z8 helped me track moving subjects with ease, ensuring sharp and detailed shots.

Final Thoughts
My visit to Zoo Planckendael was both inspiring and rewarding. It reaffirmed my passion for wildlife photography and the endless possibilities it presents. Whether you’re an amateur photographer or a seasoned professional, this zoo offers an abundance of photographic opportunities.

Stay tuned for more of my wildlife adventures, and feel free to share your thoughts on my captures. Have you visited Zoo Planckendael? What was your favorite animal encounter? Let me know in the comments!

Black & White Wildlife Photography at Zoo Pairi Daiza – A Captivating Experience

Join us on a visit to Zoo Pairi Daiza, where we captured stunning black and white wildlife photography. From lions to polar bears, experience the beauty of animals in monochrome.

Last Sunday, we visited Zoo Pairi Daiza not only for a photography session but also because we love to view the animals. The morning greeted us with rain, creating a moody and dramatic atmosphere. Droplets clung to leaves and animal fur, adding a unique texture to the images. But as the day progressed, the sun broke through, casting beautiful light over the park and illuminating the animals in a breathtaking way.

Before even stepping inside, I had already decided that all my photos from this visit would be in black and white. This choice was inspired by the way monochrome enhances textures, contrasts, and emotions, making each shot more timeless and impactful. The absence of color allows the viewer to focus entirely on the details—each feather, whisker, or scale standing out in striking clarity.

Throughout the day, we encountered a wonderful variety of animals. A lion majestically perched on a tree trunk, surveying its surroundings like a true king. The polar bear moved gracefully despite its size, while the mighty rhinoceros exuded sheer power. A delicate robin, much smaller than the other animals, added a moment of quiet beauty. The elusive leopard, with its piercing gaze, was a challenge to capture, but the results were worth it. We also saw the impressive walrus, its massive form resting in the water.

Using my Nikon Z8 with the Nikkor 180-600mm lens allowed me to capture fine details even from a distance.
Forgotten Moments: The Story Behind the Pacifier

Explore the poignant story behind a black-and-white photograph of a pacifier found at Zoo Planckendael. Discover the emotional depth in life’s small, overlooked moments.

Photography has the unique ability to capture fragments of life that often go unnoticed. This black-and-white photograph of a pacifier abandoned in the rain tells a story that stirs the imagination. In its simplicity, it evokes themes of childhood, loss, and the passage of time. In today’s blog, I’ll share the inspiration behind this shot and explore the emotional depth hidden within such a seemingly mundane object.

The Setting: It was a cold, overcast day, with rain gently falling, softening the textures of the world. I stumbled upon this pacifier lying forgotten on the wet ground at Zoo Planckendael. The muted tones of the environment and the sheen of water on its surface created the perfect mood for a monochromatic capture.

The Equipment: This photograph was taken using my Nikon Z8 paired with the Nikkor 180-600mm lens. The combination provided incredible detail and allowed me to capture the subtle textures and tones of the scene. The lens's versatility made it easy to frame the shot just as I envisioned it.

The Composition: In composing this image, I wanted the pacifier to be the sole focus. By positioning it off-center and using a shallow depth of field, I emphasized its isolation. The background blurs into a textured canvas, drawing the viewer’s eye to the object’s intricate details — the worn edges, the subtle reflections, and the tactile contrast between plastic and metal.

The Emotional Layer: At first glance, it’s just a pacifier. But as you look closer, you might begin to wonder: Who left it behind? Was it a rushed parent carrying a crying child? Or perhaps a small toddler dropped it, distracted by something more exciting? The unanswered questions give the image a narrative quality, inviting viewers to create their own stories.

Why Black and White? Color can sometimes distract from the essence of a scene. Stripping the image of its hues allowed me to focus on texture, light, and form. The grayscale tones highlight the rawness of the moment, amplifying the pacifier’s sense of abandonment and melancholy.

Takeaway: Photography isn’t just about grand landscapes or dramatic portraits; it’s also about finding beauty and meaning in the small, overlooked details of life. This image reminds us that even the simplest objects can carry profound emotional weight.

Closing: Next time you’re out with your camera, take a moment to notice the little things around you. Every object has a story, waiting to be told through your lens. What story will you capture next?

A Day at Zoo Planckendael: Capturing Wildlife Moments

Join me on a spontaneous photography adventure at Zoo Planckendael. From pelicans posing to lions hunting for hidden treats, discover the beauty of wildlife through my lens.

Our subscription to Zoo Planckendael was ending, so I decided to renew it during my lunch break yesterday. To be honest, I took a bit longer break than usual and arrived at the zoo around 11 AM. The weather was perfect, with beautiful light, and since I always have my trusty Nikon Z8 and some lenses with me, I decided to explore the zoo.

As soon as you walk in, you pass by the pelicans, who were posing perfectly for a group photo. I couldn't resist capturing their elegance. I then walked towards the Asia area and noticed the elephants behaving strangely. Climbing a hill, I heard sawing sounds and realized they were trimming some trees with a chainsaw. The elephants were clearly not fans of the noise. I managed to get a picture of the workers trimming the trees.

Continuing my walk, I headed to the lion enclosure and saw the caregiver just leaving with an empty bucket, indicating she had just hidden some food for the lions. Within a few minutes, the male lion rushed out, eagerly searching for the hidden treats. I stayed there for more than half an hour and got some fascinating shots of the lion's behavior.

I then walked onto the skybridge between the trees to get a better view of the tree trimmers. While there, I spotted a red panda high up in a tree, a delightful surprise. As I made my way towards the exit, I came across the bison, camels, and some storks. It seems the storks are already starting to build their nests.

The reason I needed to walk to the exit was that I had an online appointment at 1 PM with my boss for my yearly performance review, so I needed to rush home. I just made it home in time.

Overall, it was a wonderful day at Zoo Planckendael, filled with unexpected moments and great photo opportunities. I can't wait to share these images with you all.
Check my updated 2025 Zoo Planckendael album.

The sun was shining brightly this past Sunday, and we decided it was the perfect day to visit Zoo Antwerpen. It had been a while since our last visit, so I was excited to explore the zoo with my camera gear in tow. I packed my Nikon Z8 with the new NIKON Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR lens, along with my Nikon Z50 and Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Nikon Z.

As we strolled through the zoo, we came across a Pygmy Marmoset, a cute little monkey-like animal. It was a delight to photograph, and I managed to get some great shots. Next, we encountered an Abdim Stork, and I was able to capture some stunning images of this elegant bird.

One of the highlights of the day was the rhino, which was sprinting around in its enclosure. Unfortunately, I was just a bit too late to capture the action, but I did manage to get a close-up shot with the Nikon Z8 and the NIKON Z 180-600mm.

Switching to the NIKON NIKKOR Z 180-600mm Lens

As a passionate photographer, I'm always on the lookout for ways to enhance my craft. Recently, I made a significant change to my gear by swapping my trusty Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 Sport Lens for the NIKON Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR lens. This decision was driven primarily by the need for a lighter, more manageable lens that would make my photography sessions more enjoyable and less strenuous.

The Sigma 150-600mm has served me well over the years, capturing countless stunning images with its impressive zoom range and sharpness. However, its weight and bulkiness often made it challenging to handle, especially during extended shoots. That's when I decided to explore other options and came across the NIKON Z 180-600mm lens.

This Tuesday, I decided to spend my lunch break at Zoo Planckendael, camera in hand. With limited time, I focused my visit on the Asia area, and it did not disappoint.

First up was the majestic camel, which I caught in a rare moment as it was drinking. Its serene demeanor made for some stunning shots. Next, I was lucky enough to catch the red pandas during their feeding time. These adorable creatures were a delight to photograph, their playful antics adding a touch of charm to my collection.

The snowy leopard, with its piercing eyes and graceful movements, was another highlight. Capturing its elegance on camera was a rewarding experience. The young lions were in a lazy mood, lounging around without a care in the world. Their relaxed state provided a perfect opportunity to capture their majestic beauty in a different light.

The pelican, on the other hand, was flapping its wings energetically, almost as if it was putting on a show. This dynamic display made for some captivating shots.

Despite the limited time, my visit to Zoo Planckendael was a fruitful one. The Asia area, with its diverse and fascinating wildlife, offered plenty of opportunities for some great shots. I can't wait to go back and explore more of what this wonderful zoo has to offer.
Have a look in the 2025 Zoo Plackendael album.

This Wednesday, I took a refreshing lunch break at Zoo Planckendael, hoping to capture the ethereal beauty of a foggy day. The mist hung low, creating a mysterious and serene atmosphere that was perfect for photography.

Armed with my trusty Nikon Z8 and the versatile NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 V lens, I was ready to capture some stunning shots. As I wandered through the zoo, my camera ready, I was on the lookout for the perfect foggy shot. It wasn't until the end of my walk that I finally captured a stunning image of a Grey Heron perched gracefully on a branch, shrouded in the soft fog. This moment was worth the wait and truly encapsulated the tranquil beauty of the day.

During my walk, I also had the pleasure of photographing some of the zoo's most captivating residents. The Black Crowned Crane, with its striking plumage, posed elegantly for the camera. The vibrant Scarlet Ibis added a splash of color to the misty backdrop, while the playful Bonobos brought a sense of joy and energy to the scene. I even managed to snap a few shots of the adorable Koalas, who seemed unfazed by the foggy weather.

Although my time at the zoo was limited, and I had to return to work in the afternoon, the experience was incredibly rewarding. Working from home allowed me to reflect on the beautiful moments I had captured and plan my next photographic adventure.

All the pictures from this visit have been added to my 2025 Zoo Planckendael album.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of embarking on a bird hut photoshoot with my son, Dimitri, and his friend, Luc. We rented a cozy hut from Glenn Vermeersch situated near the serene landscapes of Kalmthout, Belgium.

We arrived at the hut just as the sun began to rise, casting a golden hue over the surroundings. The day was a delightful mix of clouds and sunshine, creating interesting and dynamic lighting conditions that were perfect for photography.

As we settled into the hut, we were greeted by the sights and sounds of various bird species. Among the highlights of our day were the stunning European starling, the vibrant kingfisher, the graceful moorhen, and the charming chaffinch. Each bird presented a unique opportunity to capture their beauty through the lens.

The experience was not just about photography; it was also a wonderful bonding day with my son. Sharing this passion for nature and photography with Dimitri and Luc made the day even more special. We laughed, learned, and marveled at the wonders of the avian world together.

Here are some of the photos I captured during our photoshoot:

European Starling: Its iridescent feathers shimmered in the sunlight, creating a mesmerizing display of colors.

Kingfisher: With its striking blue and orange plumage, the kingfisher was a true jewel of the water.

Moorhen: This elegant bird glided gracefully across the water, leaving ripples in its wake.

Chaffinch: The chaffinch's cheerful song and vibrant colors added a touch of joy to our day.

Overall, it was a day to remember, filled with beautiful moments and cherished memories. I look forward to more such adventures and capturing the beauty of nature through my lens.

Join me on a spontaneous New Year's Eve visit to Zoo Planckendael in Mechelen. From majestic Asia Lions to playful Red Pandas, discover the highlights of my chilly adventure.

As the year drew to a close, I decided to make the most of my early finish at work and head to Zoo Planckendael in my hometown of Mechelen. Having a subscription certainly makes spontaneous visits like this a breeze.

My first stop was the zoo's restaurant, Toepaja, where I enjoyed a quick lunch—a Queen's snack. With my hunger satisfied, I ventured into the Asia section of the zoo. I deliberately avoided the orangutan enclosure, knowing that the cold weather would cause my camera to fog up.

My first destination was the Asia Lions. To my delight, the female lion and her two young teenagers were outside, basking in the chilly air. I seized the opportunity to capture some stunning photos of these majestic creatures.

After spending about half an hour with the lions, I continued my journey to the other side of the zoo, hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive Snow Leopards. Unfortunately, luck wasn't on my side this time. However, my spirits were lifted when I reached the Red Panda enclosure. One of the red pandas was particularly active, and with a bit of patience, I managed to snap some great shots.

As the cold began to seep in, I decided to wrap up my visit and head home. It was a short but fulfilling trip, and I can't wait to share the photos from this New Year's Eve adventure with you all.

Stay tuned for the next post!

I was a bit early finished with my work, so I decided to make a quick visit to Zoo Planckendael. The weather was cloudy and cold, but I was eager to see what photographic opportunities awaited me.

I started on the Asian route, where the first animals I came across were the elephants. I made some nice pictures of them before moving on to the young lion teenagers. One of the lions made a funny face, and I was lucky to snap it—a good thing since it was Friday the 13th. However, it was very cold, and my hands started freezing, so I decided to head home.

Zoo Planckendael never disappoints with its diverse and vibrant wildlife. Each visit offers new and exciting experiences, and this one was no exception. The Asian route, in particular, is a treasure trove of photographic subjects, from the majestic animals to the lush landscapes.

I'm already looking forward to my next visit and the chance to capture more of the beauty and wonder that Zoo Planckendael has to offer.

Last Sunday, the weather was pretty good, so we decided to make the most of our Zoo Pairi Daiza subscription. With my camera gear packed, including my new Nikon Z8, we set off for a day of adventure and photography.

Zoo Pairi Daiza never fails to amaze with its diverse wildlife and beautiful landscapes. This time, I was particularly excited to capture some stunning shots of the brown bears, pumas, raccoons, and tigers. Each animal had its own unique charm, and the Nikon Z8 did a fantastic job of bringing out the details and colors in every shot.

The brown bears were a sight to behold, even though most of them were sleeping on the rocks. Their powerful presence was still palpable, and I managed to get some serene shots of them resting. The pumas, with their sleek and graceful movements, were equally captivating. The raccoons, always curious and mischievous, provided some delightful moments. And the tigers, majestic and awe-inspiring, were the highlight of the day.

Pairi Daiza offers endless opportunities for photography enthusiasts like me. Whether it's the vibrant flora, the exotic fauna, or the serene landscapes, there's always something new to discover and capture. I'm already looking forward to our next visit and the chance to explore more of this incredible zoo.

First Zoo Visit with My Nikon Z8: Capturing Wildlife Moments

Join me on my first adventure with the Nikon Z8 at Zoo Planckendael. From herons to baby monkeys, discover the stunning wildlife moments I captured on a sunny, cold day.

A few days ago, I embarked on an exciting adventure to Zoo Planckendael with my new Nikon Z8. The day was perfect for photography—cold, sunny, and full of vibrant life.

As I wandered through the zoo, my Nikon Z8 proved to be an exceptional companion. One of the highlights was capturing a heron in the midst of a dramatic struggle, trying to swallow a large fish. The clarity and detail in the photos were astounding, showcasing the heron's determination and the fish's last moments.

The elephant enclosure was another fantastic spot. The majestic creatures moved gracefully, and I managed to snap some stunning shots of them interacting with each other. The Nikon Z8's fast autofocus and high resolution made it easy to capture their every move.

The teenage lions were a joy to photograph as well. Their playful antics and fierce expressions were perfectly preserved in my shots, thanks to the camera's impressive burst mode and sharpness.

But the most memorable moment of the day was photographing a newly born monkey, just 12 days old. The little one clung to its mother, exploring its surroundings with wide, curious eyes. The Nikon Z8 captured these tender moments beautifully, making them look almost lifelike.

Overall, I am incredibly pleased with the performance of the Nikon Z8. It exceeded my expectations in every way, and I can't wait to take it on more adventures. Stay tuned for more photos and stories from my photographic journeys!

City Trip to Prague: A Photographic Journey

My friend and I recently embarked on an exciting city trip to Prague, and it was an adventure to remember. For the first time, we decided to travel by night train, which added an extra layer of excitement to our journey.

Our trip began at Antwerpen Centraal, with stops at Den Haag, Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, and finally, Prague. We boarded the train in Antwerp and found ourselves sharing a cozy compartment with two lovely girls from Antwerp who were traveling to Berlin. It was a delightful experience, and we enjoyed chatting with them during the journey.

We arrived in Prague around 11 AM and headed straight to our hotel. Fortunately, our room was ready, so we unpacked and set out to explore the town. The charm of Prague's streets and architecture immediately captivated us, and we couldn't wait to capture its beauty through our lenses.

We spent four days in Prague, visiting most of the major sightseeing spots, including the iconic Prague Castle. Each day was filled with new discoveries and countless photo opportunities. The city's rich history and stunning architecture provided a perfect backdrop for our photography.

During our stay, we also visited the Museum of Sex Machines and the Gallery of Steel Figures, among many other fascinating sites. On our last day, we went to the Prague Zoo, which was a delightful experience and offered plenty of opportunities for capturing amazing wildlife photos.

My recent adventure to the US was nothing short of exhilarating. My son, Dimitri, was already in the States for a conference, and I joined him a few days later. This was my first time traveling alone on a continental flight, and the excitement was palpable.

Day 0: Traveling to the USA.
I embarked on my journey from Brussels, with a layover in Amsterdam (AMS) before heading to Salt Lake City (SLC). Unfortunately, my flight from AMS to SLC was delayed, causing me to miss my connecting flight to Jackson Hole (JAC). After a five-hour wait, I was rebooked on the next available flight. The original plan was for Dimitri and me to fly together to JAC, but plans changed. Nevertheless, Dimitri was there to pick me up at the airport, and we drove to our hotel the Elk Country Inn.
LINK TO ALBUM - DAY 0

Day 1: Tetons National Park.
The next day, we started early with breakfast and set off for Tetons National Park. On our way, we were thrilled to spot a moose. We stopped to capture some beautiful photos of this majestic creature. As we continued our drive, we noticed a cluster of cars off the road. Curious, we decided to investigate and were pleasantly surprised to find a herd of moose. We spent a considerable amount of time there, taking numerous photos.

Our journey continued as we captured images of a famous barn and the stunning landscapes that surrounded us. The beauty of Tetons National Park was truly breathtaking, and it was a photographer's paradise.

As we drove deeper into the park, I was amazed by its beauty. After a while, we got very lucky. In the distance, we saw some cars parked by the road. We decided to stop and quickly prepare our camera equipment. To our delight, we spotted a female grizzly with three cubs in the riverbed. They were already moving into the woods, but some locals mentioned they might come out a little further away and cross the road. We moved to a clearing down the road, but they didn't appear there. Instead, they came out near the previous spot. I quickly took some pictures of them crossing and thought it was over. As I was packing my gear, someone shouted that the bears were coming out of the woods near the clearing. I quickly grabbed my camera and started taking pictures freehand. The bears came within 50 meters of us, which was very exciting We stayed there, capturing photos until the light was gone.

We drove tired towards the hotel, but first, to satisfy our hunger, we stopped at Bubba's Bar-B-Que Restaurant, which was conveniently located close to our hotel. We enjoyed a delicious Mixed BBQ meal. After that, we went to bed quite early, as we had an early start planned for the next day to head to Yellowstone National Park.
LINK TO ALBUM - DAY 1

Day 2: Yellowstone National Park
We had another early breakfast at 6:30 AM and left for Yellowstone right after. We drove straight through Tetons National Park to arrive at sunrise and explore some sights. Then we went to Norris Geyser Basin, where I took some nice pictures. We tried to find some wildlife, but unfortunately, it remained with landscapes.
We spent the night in Yellowstone at Canyon Hotel.
LINK TO ALBUM - DAY 2

Day 3: Yellowstone National Park
Again, we were up early to catch the golden hour. We tried to find wolves and climbed a hill, but no luck—just some beautiful sunrise pictures. We drove a bit further and saw many cars parked. Far away on a hill, we noticed a group of people. Dimitri quickly went to check it out. There were 24 wolves to spot there, but I didn't go myself because the terrain felt too uneven, and I didn't want to risk back pain. While everyone was focused on the wolves, a coyote suddenly walked by, and I managed to take some nice pictures.

We spent the rest of the day in the geyser basin, where we visited the Old Faithful geyser and another basin, though I can't recall its name. At the end of the day, we drove back to Jackson and enjoyed a nice dinner.
LINK TO ALBUM - DAY 3

Day 4: Tetons National Park
We were up early again, but this time we didn't have breakfast at the hotel. Instead, we enjoyed a hearty meal at a real American diner Virginian Restaurant, complete with bacon, eggs, and French toast. After breakfast, we headed back to Tetons National Park. We visited several sights, including the Visitor Center, Jackson Lake Dam, and Jenny Lake, which resulted in some nice pictures.

The highlight of the day was yet to come. As we were driving, we saw a lot of cars parked in the distance at the riverbed where we had seen the grizzly a few days ago. And yes, there they were again, playing in the riverbed. Unfortunately, the pictures weren't that good due to the heat haze in the riverbed.

Later that day, we were driving around and saw cars in the distance again. We went there and followed a local person who mentioned that a male grizzly might come out of the bushes a bit further. That person turned out to be Greg Balvin, the authority on filming grizzlies in the Tetons and the filmmaker of a documentary about Grizzly 399. (Grizzly 399 had died a few days before we arrived in Jackson, killed by a car.)

We stayed talking to Greg until the sun was behind the mountain. Greg told us some amusing stories about his encounters with 399. I never saw 399, but through Greg's stories, I will always remember her.

We drove back to Jackson and had a nice steak dinner at Gun Barrel Steak and Game House. This was our last night in Jackson.
LINK TO ALBUM - DAY 4

Day 5: Tetons National Park & return home
We got up early, eager to try and photograph some wildlife. We had time until about 11 AM because our flight to SLC was at 2:36 PM. Unfortunately, we didn't find much, just an elk in the distance. We then drove to JAC airport and returned the car. Our flight to SLC included a layover of a few hours, followed by a 10-hour flight to Amsterdam, and finally, a 2.5-hour train ride to Brussels.
LINK TO ALBUM - DAY 4

Summary:
This was a super fun trip. I have to thank my son Dimitri for the invitation and for being my guide in Tetons & Yellowstone National Parks. I hope you can enjoy the pictures.

Until the next adventure.

Nature Photography at Wim Bosch's Photo Hut | Capturing Wildlife with Dimitri

Join me and my son Dimitri on a nature photography adventure at Wim Bosch's photo hut. From capturing squirrels and finches to a close-up encounter with a majestic buzzard, it was a day filled with wildlife and unforgettable moments.

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Wim Bosch's renowned photo hut with my son, Dimitri. Known for its serene setup and prime location, this hideaway offered us the perfect backdrop to capture some of nature's most beautiful moments.

Armed with our cameras, we settled into the hut, eager to spot the wildlife that frequents the area. The morning was calm, and before long, the first visitor arrived—a quick-footed squirrel darting across the forest floor. Its bushy tail flicked as it searched for food, providing us with some fantastic close-up shots.

Birdlife was abundant. While I managed to identify a few species like the finch, woodpecker, and the always-charming robin, there were plenty of other feathered friends whose names eluded us. Each one brought a new opportunity to test our lenses, and even the smallest birds added a burst of colour and energy to the scene.

The real highlight of the day came when a buzzard—a regular in this area—flew in and perched on a nearby branch, where we had placed a lure. Watching this magnificent bird of prey up close was a rare treat, and we took full advantage of the opportunity to capture its striking features. There’s something awe-inspiring about seeing such a powerful bird in a moment of stillness, and getting those shots felt like a true achievement.

All in all, it was a wonderful day of bonding with Dimitri and immersing ourselves in nature’s wonders. We left with memory cards full of stunning shots and hearts full of appreciation for the wildlife around us.

If you're ever looking to experience nature photography in a tranquil setting, I highly recommend a visit to Wim Bosch's photo hut. Whether you're a seasoned photographer or just starting out, it's a place where nature comes alive right in front of your lens.
Check his calendar on his website.

Looking forward to the next adventure with my son, check this link for our plans "Chasing Light in the Tetons: A Photographic Journey"

Springtime at Planckendael: Adorable Ducklings, Soaring Storks, and New Love

Embrace the joys of spring with a visit to Planckendael Zoo! Witness the first steps of fluffy ducklings, watch a young stork take flight, and capture the heartwarming moments of new animal love. Photography tips included.

Spring had sprung at Planckendael Zoo, and my wife and I decided it was the perfect day to capture the fresh energy with the cameras. The zoo was alive with the sights and sounds of new life!

Everywhere we turned, there were adorable fluffy ducklings taking a swim. A young stork, perched precariously on its nest, seemed to be practising its first wing flaps, determined to take to the sky. Even the capybaras had joined the baby boom, with their little ones always hungry.

Love was also in the air! A new male gibbon had arrived, and it seemed to be a case of love at first sight for the female. Their playful interactions were a joy to witness.

Of course, the weather wasn't perfect. A touch of cloud cover meant the lighting conditions weren't ideal for photography. But despite that, we had a wonderful day. I captured some fantastic photos, but more importantly, we enjoyed the beauty of spring at Planckendael and the joy of witnessing new life all around us.

Tips for your next Zoo Photography Adventure:

Be prepared for anything: Spring weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers and be ready to adjust your shooting based on the light.

Focus on the details: Newborn animals are full of charm. Capture their fluffy fur, clumsy steps, and curious eyes.

Don't forget the adults: Spring is a time of courtship and family bonding. Look for interesting interactions between animals.

Enjoy the moment: While capturing great photos is important, don't forget to simply enjoy the experience of being surrounded by nature and wildlife.

I hope this inspires you to grab your camera and head to your local zoo! You never know what springtime surprises you might capture.

There's a special kind of excitement that comes with an adventure, and that's exactly what I'm diving into this fall! My son, Dimitri, recently invited me to join him on a nature photography trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA. With him attending a conference nearby, it was the perfect opportunity to combine a visit and explore the stunning Teton National Park together.

Knowing my love for photography, Dimitri threw out the invitation, and with some hesitation, I said yes! Flights are booked, and from October 23rd to 29th, I'll be trading in my usual backdrop for the majestic Teton Range.

Jackson Hole in autumn is a photographer's dream. Imagine capturing the vibrant tapestry of aspens ablaze with golden hues, their leaves contrasting with the evergreens that stand tall against the dramatic Teton peaks. The crisp mountain air and the promise of frosty mornings will undoubtedly add a touch of magic to the experience.

While Teton National Park is the main focus, there's a chance we might also venture into Yellowstone National Park, another jewel of the American wilderness. The geothermal wonders, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes would be incredible additions to the trip.

Of course, I'll be documenting the entire journey through my lens, and I can't wait to share the beauty of Jackson Hole with all of you. Stay tuned for stunning fall foliage photos, dramatic mountain vistas, and maybe even a glimpse of some iconic wildlife!

Who knows, this might just spark your own wanderlust and inspire you to plan your own autumn adventure.

Another Nature Shoot Adventure with My Son Dimitri: Stone Owl Shenanigans!

Join me and my son Dimitri on a rainy adventure photographing a family of stone owls! Discover the challenges (and rewards) of nature photography in less-than-ideal weather. #owls #photography #wildlife

Hey everyone, and welcome back to the blog! Today, I'm excited to share another nature photography adventure with my son, Dimitri. This time, we ventured out to a fantastic photo hut booked through glennvermeersch.be – the one featuring the adorable stone owl family!

The setting itself was idyllic. Imagine a cosy little hut nestled amongst the trees, offering a perfect vantage point to observe these fascinating birds. We were both buzzing with anticipation!

However, Mother Nature had other plans. As soon as we settled in, the heavens opened up, and a steady rain began to fall. While not ideal for photography, it did add a certain moody atmosphere to the scene.

The real stars of the show, though, were the owl parents! We were thrilled to discover they had chicks – not just two, as we initially thought, but three! It was a constant flurry of activity as they tirelessly brought food back to their hungry offspring.

The rain and the resulting lower light conditions meant we couldn't use high shutter speeds, leading to some motion blur in some photos. While this might not be ideal for capturing perfectly crisp owl portraits, it does add a sense of movement and dynamism to the scene.

Despite the rain, Dimitri and I had a fantastic time observing these magnificent birds. Capturing their interactions, even with some blur, was a truly rewarding experience.

Ever dreamt of capturing stunning wildlife photographs without disturbing their natural habitat? Well, recently, I had again a fantastic opportunity to do just that alongside my son, Dimitri, and his friend, Luc. Our destination? The incredible photo hut 2 from Glenn Vermeersch (glennvermeersch.be).

Hut 2 provided the perfect setting for a day of birding photography. Secluded and strategically placed, it allowed us to observe a variety of feathered friends up close without spooking them. Equipped with our cameras and a healthy dose of patience, we settled in for a truly rewarding experience.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly encountering a majestic Buzzard. Its powerful form and piercing gaze made for some truly captivating shots. We also had the pleasure of capturing Hawks, Robins, and a variety of other delightful birds flitting amongst the branches and soaring through the clear sky.

The beauty of using a photo hut lies not only in the incredible access it provides, but also in the camaraderie it fosters. Sharing this experience with Dimitri was truly special. We captured amazing photographs together, but more importantly, we shared in the thrill of the hunt for the perfect frame. Having Luc, Dimitri's friend, there added another layer of enjoyment, he is not specialised in videography. Their friendly conversation and shared techniques made the day even more memorable.

By the end of the day, our memory cards were brimming with stunning wildlife photographs, each one a testament to the magic of Hut 2 and the power of photo adventures with loved ones and close friends.

Uncover the magic of Essen's wilderness, one snapshot at a time.

A few weeks ago, we made the decision to explore the local nature in Essen with my son Dimitri and his friend Luc, capturing the beauty through my camera lens. While Dimitri and Luc were no strangers to capturing the mesmerizing world of local wildlife and birds, it was a brand-new experience for me.

We opted to visit a photo hideout, a place where you can quietly observe and photograph the wonders of nature without disturbing its inhabitants. Located in Essen, this photo hideout provided us with an excellent opportunity to capture some of the most fascinating residents of the region.

It was a reasonably beautiful day, but the chill in the air was palpable. Fortunately, I had a cosy blanket with me to ward off the cold. Nevertheless, the prospect of observing and capturing the local fauna kept us motivated.

Armed with my Nikon Z50 and a Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 Sport Lens on an Nikon FTZ II Adapter , we ventured into the photo hideout, ready to document nature in all its glory. Drawing from their experience, Dimitri and Luc shared valuable tips on focusing techniques and ideal settings for this specific environment.

Throughout the day, we were fortunate to capture some impressive moments. A majestic hawk soared through the sky, and to our delight, it landed on the ground to feast on its prey. The sight of the hawk enjoying its meal added a unique and thrilling element to our nature adventure.

Not long after, a buzzard joined the scene, descending to partake in the feast. The sight of these magnificent birds sharing the spoils of their hunt was a captivating and rare occurrence, and we were grateful to witness it.

In addition to the birds of prey, we also observed a lively robin flitting around in search of food and the vivid spectacle of a Eurasian Jay darting through the trees and ground.

In addition to capturing photos, we recorded videos to document the natural movements and sounds of these beautiful creatures. It was amazing to see them behave undisturbed, knowing they were safe from our curious gazes.

Despite the cold, it was an unforgettable experience that only deepened my love for photography and nature. I am grateful to have shared this day with my son and his friend, who introduced me to the world of nature photography. The photos and memories we captured, including the dynamic interaction between the hawk and the buzzard, will hold a special place in my photography adventures.

With my camera in hand and the beautiful nature surrounding me, I eagerly anticipate more moments like these, captured through the lens of my Nikon Z50 and the powerful Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 Sport Lens. The local wilderness of Essen has gifted us a day full of wonder, and I can't wait to discover and capture more of these treasures in the future.

In the ever-evolving world of photography, my faithful companion, the Nikon D5300, has stood the test of time for a remarkable 11 years, capturing countless memories. Yet, with the desire for versatility and creative exploration, I recently decided to embark on a new photographic journey by adding the Nikon Z50 to my kit.

The deliberation leading up to this decision was not taken lightly. The impetus behind this choice was simple yet profound: my Sigma 150-600mm Sport Lens , a stalwart companion for animal park excursions, left me yearning for a shorter focal length on several occasions. The solution presented itself in the form of a second camera paired with my Sigma 18-270 lens. Initially contemplating a second-hand camera to meet these needs, fate intervened, introducing me to the captivating Nikon Z8—a full-frame marvel that left me in awe.

As alluring as the Nikon Z8 was, practicality prevailed, leading me to explore alternatives that would seamlessly integrate into my photographic pursuits. Enter the Nikon Z50—a mirrorless gem that not only satisfies my requirements but does so in an affordable and efficient manner.

The Nikon Z50, with its compact design and impressive features, has become a versatile tool during my adventures in animal parks. The seamless transition between my Sigma 150-600mm Sport Lens and the adaptable Sigma 18-270 lens allows me to capture the essence of wildlife with unparalleled ease.

This new addition to my photographic arsenal not only provides practical benefits but also ushers in a wave of creative possibilities. As I navigate this transition, my trusted D5300 continues to fulfil its duties, while the Nikon Z50 injects a renewed enthusiasm and a fresh perspective into my beloved hobby.

In the coming chapters of my photographic journey, I anticipate exploring uncharted territories, pushing creative boundaries, and capturing moments that tell compelling stories. With the Nikon Z50 by my side, I embark on a new chapter—one filled with discovery, growth, and the sheer joy of capturing the world through a lens that promises both versatility and innovation.

June brought more than just warm weather for my friend Heidi and me—it ushered in a five-day escape to the enchanting city of Budapest. Our base? The sophisticated and adults-only Hotel Cortile, where luxury met tranquility, and every moment felt like a private celebration.

Hotel Haven: Adults-Only Magic at Cortile

Our stay at Hotel Cortile was nothing short of magical. Tucked away from the bustling city, it offered a haven of peace and luxury. From the elegant décor to the personalized service, every detail was meticulously crafted to create an atmosphere of relaxation and romance. Cortile became more than just a hotel; it became the backdrop for our unforgettable Budapest love story.

River Romance: Sailing to Szentendre

One of the highlights of our trip was a day-long river cruise to Szentendre. As the Danube embraced our boat, we sailed away from the city's hustle to the charming artist's town. Szentendre, with its cobblestone streets and vibrant arts scene, welcomed us with open arms. The day unfolded like a dream—exploring galleries, savoring local cuisine, and stealing moments by the riverbank. The cruise not only showcased Budapest's beauty but also introduced us to the hidden gems along the Danube.

Capturing Memories: Budapest in Our Hearts

From the panoramic views of Buda Castle to the lively markets of Pest, Budapest cast its spell on us. The iconic Chain Bridge shimmered under the city lights, creating a backdrop for evening strolls that felt straight out of a fairytale. Each ruin bar we discovered and every thermal bath we indulged in became a chapter in our Budapest love affair.

Conclusion: Budapest, You Stole Our Hearts

As we bid farewell to Budapest, the city that effortlessly blended history, romance, and adventure, we carried with us more than just souvenirs. Budapest gifted us a collection of moments—sunsets on the Danube, laughter echoing through ruin bars, and the quiet intimacy of a city that felt like home.

Epilogue: Until We Meet Again, Budapest

Our 5-day city escape turned into a love letter to Budapest. From the adults-only bliss of Hotel Cortile to the riverside romance of Szentendre, every experience was a stroke on the canvas of our shared memories. Until we return, Budapest, you'll remain the keeper of our heart's fondest adventures.

Equipment used for this shoot:
 - Nikon D3500 + Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3
 - Tarion Pro PB-01 Backpack

Link to album

Lockdown Chronicles to Zoo Delights: A Humorous Photographic Journey

Embark on a laughter-filled odyssey from lockdown boredom to zoo adventures! Join us as we explore the whimsical side of life through the lens, capturing the hilarious tales of everyday moments and the wild antics of zoo inhabitants. Get ready to chuckle your way through a visual safari like no other!

The past year and a half brought unexpected challenges and changes to our lives. The COVID-19 lockdowns altered the way we lived, worked, and interacted. In the midst of uncertainty, I found solace and inspiration in an unlikely place—my daily walks. Armed with my camera, I embarked on a journey to capture the essence of the world around me during those long walks, seeking beauty amid the chaos.

Lockdown Lens: Rediscovering the Everyday

As the world slowed down, my camera became a companion on the quiet streets and deserted parks. With each click, I discovered the beauty of the mundane—the play of light on empty streets, the resilience of nature reclaiming spaces, and the silent stories told by closed storefronts. It was a period of introspection, and my lens became a tool to document the unprecedented times we were living through.

Post-Lockdown Adventures: Roaming Zoos for Inspiration

As the grip of the pandemic began to loosen, I redirected my lens towards a new adventure—the enchanting world of zoos. Plackendael and Antwerpen Zoos became my playgrounds, offering a canvas rich with life and color. The resumption of outdoor activities allowed me to capture the raw beauty of wildlife, the joy of families exploring together, and the intricate details of each animal's existence.

Zoo Galleries: A Visual Symphony of Life

In my Zoo galleries, you'll find a collection of moments frozen in time. From the majestic stride of a lion to the curious gaze of a monkey, each photograph tells a story of resilience, beauty, and the interconnectedness of life. The vibrant colors and dynamic compositions aim to transport viewers into the heart of the animal kingdom, providing a glimpse into the wonders that unfold within the carefully curated landscapes of Plackendael and Antwerpen Zoos.

Continuing the Journey

As the world adapts to a new normal, my camera remains a faithful companion on this photographic journey. From the simplicity of everyday life during lockdown to the grandeur of wildlife in zoos, each photograph serves as a testament to the power of observation and the enduring beauty that surrounds us.

Join me on this visual odyssey, where every click captures a moment in time, telling a unique story waiting to be shared.

Black-and-white photography has a magical quality. The most famous photographers work in black and white. By capturing the world in subtle shades of gray, you can add an entirely different emphasis to your photos. However, black-and-white photography requires a different way of seeing. Because, how do you create an interesting photo without relying on all the beautiful colours around you? What is the secret to a stunning black-and-white photo?

Focus on shapes and patterns.
The major difference from colour photography is that you can't use colours to direct attention. When all colours are removed, composition becomes even more important. Composition is a key way to make your photo appealing. Think about diagonal lines and the golden ratio, but also utilize shapes, patterns, and textures that might not stand out in colour, yet truly come to life in a black-and-white photo.

Pay attention to contrast.
For a black-and-white photo, it's often beautiful to show a greater contrast between light and dark. This difference is called contrast. Contrast is one of the most crucial elements in black-and-white photos. Without contrast, your photos can quickly become dull. Some cameras allow you to adjust contrast directly, but you can also modify this in nearly any photo or editing software. You can easily adjust contrast in our photo book software as well. Photography is writing with light. And this might apply even more to black-and-white photography than to colour photos.

Seek out the right light.
Many novice photographers believe that the best photos are taken with the sun at their back, but you can also create beautiful black-and-white photos in low-contrast light or in bright backlight. How about side lighting that highlights the texture of a subject? And if you tend to stay indoors on cloudy days due to “boring light,” go outside from now on! You'll discover that you can create the most stunning black-and-white photos.

Shoot your photos in colour.
Some cameras have the option to immediately take photos in black and white, but you retain more control over your photos when you still have the colour information. It's better to edit the photos afterward in an editing program. Did you know that you can easily convert your photos to black and white when creating your photo book in our photo book software?

Or shoot in RAW.
Those who shoot in RAW file format can comfortably photograph in black and white. Even though you see a black-and-white photo on your screen (which is certainly useful for those wanting to take black-and-white photos), all colour information is retained. So, a colour photo is stored that you can potentially use or edit later. One of the advantages of shooting in RAW.

Which subjects are suitable for black-and-white photography?
Street photography is often done in black and white to avoid distraction from colour. A black-and-white photo truly emphasizes the person rather than, for example, the clothes they're wearing. Portrait photos are also typically taken in black and white for that reason. However, landscape photos can be equally stunning in black and white. That's precisely because you look at a landscape differently.
